Description
Gymnocalycium ragonesii is a small, solitary cactus, notable for its strongly flattened, disc-shaped stem, often almost level with the soil surface. The epidermis is dark green to bluish-green, sometimes with a slightly matte appearance. Ribs are low, broad, and divided into rounded tubercles, giving the plant a compact, sculptural look. Areoles are small and bear short, fine spines, greyish to brown, often appressed to the body.
Flowers are produced near the center of the stem, relatively large in proportion to the plant, funnel-shaped, usually pale pink to whitish with a subtle darker midstripe. Flowering occurs in spring to early summer. Native to Argentina, this species is adapted to arid environments and prefers a very well-drained, mineral substrate, careful watering during the growing season, and a dry winter rest. Highly valued by collectors for its unique, flattened form.
