Description
Gymnocalycium platygonum CH1171, Salinas Grandes, Catamarca, Argentina 206m is a small to medium-sized cactus, usually solitary, distinguished by its very flattened, depressed-globose stem, which gives the plant a characteristically low profile. The epidermis is grey-green to bluish-green, often slightly matte or waxy. The stem is divided into 8–12 broad, angular ribs with pronounced, polygonal tubercles. Areoles are well spaced and bear short, stiff spines, grey to brownish, slightly curved and spreading.
Funnel-shaped flowers are produced near the crown, typically pale pink to light lavender with a darker midstripe on the outer tepals. Flowering occurs in late spring to early summer.
